Become a Contract Instructor

Do you have a skill, hobby, or area of expertise you would love to share with the community? The City welcomes instructors who can provide quality recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

Proposed programs may include classes, workshops, or educational programs in areas such as art, dance, fitness, music, sports, enrichment, technology, and more.

Contract instructors are independent contractors and are not employees of the City of Whittier.

Please note: Workshops or classes designed to sell or recommend products from your business are prohibited.

Before You Apply

Prospective instructors are encouraged to review the current class schedule at whittierrec.com to verify that a similar program is not already being offered.

Instructors may propose class fees, dates, and times; however, final approval is based on program review and facility availability.

How to Apply

Step 1: Submit Required Forms

Complete and submit a Contract Instructor Application and a Contract Instructor Class Proposal to Darren Schmidt, PRCS Supervisor of Classes, at dschmidt@cityofwhittier.org.

Step 2: Complete Live Scan Fingerprinting

Work with the Classes Supervisor to complete the Live Scan fingerprint process through the Whittier Police Department. Primary instructors and representatives teaching classes for participants under 18 years old must complete a fingerprint submission and background check through the Department of Justice.

Step 3: Obtain a City Business License

If the Live Scan fingerprint report is approved, the instructor must purchase a City of Whittier business license.

Step 4: Complete the Independent Contractor Agreement

Once the class is approved, the background check is cleared, and a City business license is obtained, the instructor will complete an Agreement for Performance of Services by Independent Contractor.

Instructor Payment Structure

The City uses the following standard payment split for contract recreation classes:

City Facility

60% / 40%

60% paid to the instructor and 40% retained by the City when the class is held at a City facility.

Private Facility

70% / 30%

70% paid to the instructor and 30% retained by the City when the class is held at an approved private facility.

Additional Requirements

  • A completed W-9 may be required for payment processing.
  • Additional documentation may be requested during the program review and approval process.
